July 1st Walk Out: Rally for a fair budget and revenue
July 1st is the first day of the new fiscal year for many essential services/programs in Illinois. Given the absence of a state budget, many community organizations and other state funded entities will have to stop their services, lay off staff, and some will have to completely close their doors. Many communities have already seen the devastating impact to the most vulnerable Illinoisans.
At Chinese American Service League (CASL) in Chicago, budget cuts could severely impact the following programs;
– School Age Center
– Teen REACH Program
– Immigrant Family Resource Program
– Adult Day Service Program
– In-Home Service Program
– New Americans Initiative Program

At CASL, the Housing and Financial Education Department empowers low to moderate income families. The Child Education & Development Services provides an enriching bilingual, bi-cultural learning environment. Family and Community Services strengthens the physical and mental well-being of our diverse population. The Employment & Training Department assists Chicago-area job seekers at a variety of levels. The Elderly Services Department enables older adults to maintain healthy living, independence, and dignity. We strongly urge the Governor’s Office and Illinois Legislature to continue funding these vital programs.
On Wednesday, July 1, over 500 community members from across Illinois will Walk Out and rally at the Thompson Center to show how communities will be impacted by budget cuts proposed by Governor Bruce Rauner and leaders in the General Assembly. Service providers (including members of the Pan-Asian Voter Empowerment [PAVE] Coalition), clients, and their families will be among those gathering in downtown Chicago to show the urgency behind the state budget.
